Saturday Night Movie:
Yoga Unveiled

Gita Desai has always viewed traditional Indian culture and art in all its manifestations with the utmost reverence.  From India’s philosophical ideas to its food, music and dance, Gita treasures the richness and sophistication of ancient Indian culture.  Because Indian culture is holistic and integrative by nature, she set out to make two films that would capture the breadth and depth of India’s cultural offerings.  Gita’s first endeavor, Yoga Unveiled, traces the roots of the yogic tradition from its beginnings to the present day.  Her second documentary, Raga Unveiled, explores the essence of North Indian classical music.  Both films illuminate the power of these traditions to liberate and transform mankind over the course of several thousand years to the present day. Gita lived in CT with her husband Mukesh, who funded these two films, for 30 years. She recently moved to the Los Angeles area.

Health Preservation of Skin through Ayurveda

Skin health is wealth. The skin's thickness ranges from 3-20/38 Briha in Ayurveda. It is a major site of intercommunication between the body and its surroundings, and it forms an effective barrier against microbial invasion which can protect from chemical, osmotic, thermal and UV radiation. The skin initiates primary immune responses and is the organ of immune surveillance against pathogen; certain protective substances are synthesized within the skin. The skin is an instrument of socio-sexual communication and reflects the emotional status by means of facial muscular and vascular responses. It is a major sensory organ enriched by nerve terminals and specialized receptors. Melanin beneath the skin has a protective role against UV radiation and acts as a scavenger of harmful free radicals. The general state of health may be elicited through the skin, and thus, the skin is a mirror of many diseases. Ayurveda has many reservations of twacha (Skin). It deals with its health, diseases and beauty through food habits, lifestyle, exercises , abhyanga (oil massage) and swedan (steam bath). The present paper shall address the areas of anatomy, physiology, health, diseases and beauty through ayurveda.
